The Should, The Bad and the Russo (Finn Balor edition)
By The Andrew Bello
The Should: I might be in the minority in this case, but Finn Balor should under no circumstances be in the Royal Rumble. Finn already has a built-in rematch for the Universal Title. He never lost it. In fact, he’s yet to lose in any capacity on the main roster. Also, the uncertainty around his shoulder is too great. The WWE already had to write around a Balor injury right after the draft; they won’t be putting the Wrestlemania main event at risk. All of Finn’s potential dance partners at Mania are starting to pair off in his absence. There are a couple of people that don’t have definitive feuds heading into the big show: Roman Reigns and The Undertaker, in particular. Either would make a perfectly fine match. Roman and Finn have some history while Taker and Finn obviously have some eerily similar paranormal characteristics. After their fight to determine who would face Seth Rollins at Summerslam for the first ever Universal Championship, Roman humbly acknowledged Finn’s victory and stated the he wants a rematch somewhere down the road. That match was spectacular and probably a bit under appreciated in retrospect. I’d actually like to see that rematch, Roman, but not at the Grandaddy Of Them All, bruh.
My pick?: The Demon vs the Deadman. 20 minutes of entrances and 10 minutes of match, and it still might be the best half-hour of the whole card.
The Bad: This one’s hard. Again, I don’t think Finn should return in the Royal Rumble, because if he’s in it, he has to win it to maintain his air of invincibility, particularly when he’s in full Demon mode. Having said that, I’m definitely going to be marking out and throwing my hands in the air if his music should play in San Antonio. It’s entirely possible that Creative looks at Balor as having too much star power to face the performers they haven’t made plans for yet, but not enough star power to play a role in an ongoing story featuring bigger, more established Superstars. I love Finn, and my heart bled for the dude when he was still in NXT for last year’s Wrestlemania. My heart bled again when he suffered his shoulder injury. Well, the ever-infamous “Creative” is going to take the easy way out this time around.
My prediction: Balor re-debuts on the Raw after Wrestlemania because they don’t want to risk him getting re-injured mid-storyline and to give home the optimal amount of time to heel. Sorry, Finn. Enjoy your Legos! I say this is the bad because we all want to see the big Demon entrance on the biggest possible stage. Minus that, I would actually say this isn’t a horrible move on their part.
The Russo: “ALRIGHT, BRO. SO, YOU DON’T WANT TO HAVE FINN TO GET INVOLVED IN A MATCH OR ANY OF THE MAIN STORYLINES?! GOOD THING YOU CALLED ME BRO. I’VE HAD THIS ONE IN MY BACK POCKET SINCE THE FIRST FREAKIN DAY I LAID EYES ON THE FREAKIN DEMON, BRO. SO, WE HAVE FINN BALOR WALKING THROUGH THE BACKSTAGE AREA IN FULL DEMON REGALIA. HE WALKS PAST KARL ANDERSON AND LUKE GALLOWS…LIKE THAT ONE TIME WHEN ALL THE SUPPOSED SMART MARKS WENT BANANAS, BRO. BUT HE’S THE DEMON NOW. HE DOESN’T. EVEN. RECOGNIZE THEM, BRO. THEY LOOK ALL CONFUSED! BALOR IS STARING AT THE FLOOR. HE LOOKS UP. HE SAYS “HELLO GOOD BROTHERS.” LUKE AND KARL ARE POPPIN’ LIKE CRAZY. THEY THINK HE WAS MESSING WITH THEM. SWERRRRRVE!!!! ALL OF A SUDDEN, A BOLT OF LIGHTNING CRASHES BEHIND KARL AND A BURST OF FLAMES EXPLODE BEHIND LUKE. THEY TURNAROUND AND JUST INSTANTLY FAINT LIKE THEY’RE IN A ’90s TEEN SITCOM. AFTER ALL OF THEIR TIME TOGETHER IN JAPAN…THEY DIDN’T KNOW THAT FINN BALOR IS ACTUALLY THE LONG LOST BROTHER OF DESTRUCTION, BRO. THIS WHOLE HANDSOME, CHARMING IRISHMAN ACT WAS A RUSE TO GET VINCE MCMAHON TO SIGN HIM TO WWE SO HE COULD FINALLY REUNITE WITH HIS BROS, BRO!!
